A phone that’s turned off or out of battery can’t report where it is now. But that doesn’t mean you’re out of options — the phone’s last known location is often enough to find it.

The short answer: you can’t see the live location of a phone that is fully off. You can see where it was last, and recent iPhones (and some newer Android phones) remain findable for a while after shutting down through a crowd-sourced Bluetooth network.

What you can see when a phone is off

Situation iPhone Android
Phone switched off normally Last location; iPhone 11 and later often findable for hours via the Find My network Last location; some newer Pixels findable via the Find Hub network
Battery died Last location before it died (if “Send Last Location” was on) Last location before it died

SIM removed, phone on Wi‑Fi Live location Live location

How to find the last known location

Myths about tracking a switched-off phone

  • “Track it by satellite.” Phones receive GPS signals; they don’t transmit to satellites. Nobody can ping a phone through space.
  • “Track it by number for free.” A number doesn’t carry a location — on or off. See can you track a phone by number?
  • “Use the IMEI.” Only carriers and police can use it, and only when the phone connects to a network. More on IMEI.

Settings to turn on today

  1. iPhone: Settings → [your name] → Find My → Find My iPhone → turn on Find My network and Send Last Location.
  2. Android: Settings → Google → Find Hub (called Find My Device on older phones) → on; allow finding offline devices if offered.
  3. Low-battery alerts: most “turned off” phones are simply dead. AI Family Locator warns your family when a phone’s battery runs low — before it goes dark — and keeps its last known location on the family map. Set it up →

Frequently asked questions

Can a phone be tracked when it’s turned off?

Mostly no: a switched-off phone doesn’t send its location. You can see its last known location. Newer iPhones stay findable through the Find My network for a while after shutting down, and some newer Android phones support a similar feature.

Can I find a phone with a dead battery?

You’ll see where it was when the battery died, if location sharing was on. iPhone’s Find My and Google’s Find My Device both keep the last location.

Can police track a phone that is off?

Police can get the last network location from the carrier with legal authority, but a fully powered-off phone doesn’t connect to towers.

Can I find a switched-off phone by satellite for free?

No. Phones receive GPS signals from satellites but don’t transmit to them. ‘Satellite phone tracking’ sites for switched-off phones are scams.
