If your Android phone is missing, your Gmail address is the key: every Android phone signed in to a Google account can be located through Google Find Hub (formerly Find My Device).

The short answer: go to google.com/android/find on any phone or computer, sign in with the Gmail account that’s on the lost phone, and pick the device. You’ll see it on a map and can play a sound, secure it or erase it.

Step by step: find your Android phone with Gmail

  1. Open google.com/android/find in any browser — a friend’s phone works. On another Android phone you can use the Find Hub app in guest mode.
  2. Sign in with the same Google account (Gmail) used on the lost phone.
  3. Choose the phone from the list at the top.
  4. Check the map — you’ll see the current or last known location and battery level.
  5. Act:
    • Play sound — rings for 5 minutes even on silent.
    • Secure device — locks it and shows a message or phone number.
    • Factory reset device — erases it permanently (you can’t locate it afterwards).

What has to be true for it to work

Requirement Why
The phone is on Otherwise you see the last location only
Signed in to your Google account That’s how Google links the phone to you
Location is turned on No location, no map
Mobile data or Wi‑Fi To send the position
Find Hub (Find My Device) enabled It’s on by default on most phones

Lost an iPhone instead?

Gmail won’t help with an iPhone. Use iCloud.com/find with your Apple ID, or the Find My app on another Apple device. Our guide to finding a lost iPhone walks you through it.

If the phone was stolen

Don’t try to get it back yourself. Secure it, call your carrier to suspend the SIM, and report it to the police with the IMEI — see what an IMEI can and can’t do. Then change your Google password.

Next time, let family find it in seconds

Find My Device only works if you can sign in. If your family shares location in AI Family Locator, they can see your phone’s live or last known location and battery from their own phone — no passwords needed in a panic. Add your family by phone number →

Frequently asked questions

Can I find my phone with my Gmail account?

Yes, if it’s an Android phone signed in to that Google account with location on. Go to google.com/android/find, sign in, and you’ll see the phone on a map with options to ring, lock or erase it.

Can I find an iPhone with Gmail?

Not with Gmail. iPhones are found with the Apple ID at iCloud.com/find. If you share location with family in Google Maps, they can see your iPhone there.

What if Find My Device says the phone is offline?

It shows the last known location and time. Turn on ‘Notify me when found’ where available, and check the map again later.

Can I find someone else’s phone with their Gmail?

Only with their account and permission. Signing in to another person’s account without permission is illegal in most countries. Ask them to share location with you instead.
