How to find a location by phone number — what really happens
A phone number does not contain GPS coordinates. AI Family Locator uses the number to prepare an invitation; the shared position comes from the participating device. Sharing requires a supported iPhone, the app, an accepted invitation, location permission and an internet connection. Accuracy and update timing vary with permissions, connectivity and surroundings; check the last update time.
- You enter the number. We validate it against the international numbering plan, so you know straight away if a digit is missing or the country code is wrong.
- We create a location request. It’s a personal link you send by SMS, WhatsApp, Telegram, iMessage or email.
- They approve it. One tap in the app and their phone starts sharing its live location with you — not once, but continuously, until they choose to pause.
From that moment you don’t need the number again. The phone is on your map, with the street, the place name and the time of the last update.
What you see after the phone is found
- Live location of the phone on one map, refreshed automatically.
- Today’s route and stops — where they went and how long they stayed.
- Arrival and departure alerts for home, school, work or any place you add.
- Battery level and low-battery alerts, so a silent phone never leaves you guessing.
- One-touch SOS that sends their available position to the whole family.
Ways to locate a phone by number, compared
| Method | Live location | Works abroad | What you actually get |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI Family Locator | With active device sharing | Check availability and connection | Shared positions, history, alerts, SOS |
| Free number lookup | No | — | Country, line type, format |
| Mobile carrier | Only for police and emergency services | Limited | Cell-tower area, by legal request |
| “Track any number” websites | No | — | A map of the country code, or a link the person has to tap |
Why number-only trackers can’t deliver
A phone number identifies a telephone connection, not a live GPS position. A number-format lookup cannot locate someone on a street. Use an invitation the participant understands, and do not assume that paying for access enables sharing on another device. Sharing requires a supported iPhone, the app, an accepted invitation, location permission and an internet connection. Accuracy and update timing vary with permissions, connectivity and surroundings; check the last update time.
Tips for a fast result
- Use the full international format — the country selector adds the right +code for you. Check any number first with our country code list.
- Send the request in the messenger they use most. People approve faster where they already chat.
- Add their key places right away — home, school, work — so you get arrival alerts from day one.
