Free phone trackers that actually work
| Tool | Best for | What it does | Limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Find My | iPhone families, lost iPhones | Live location of people and devices, play sound, lost mode | iPhone, iPad and Mac only; no timeline |
| Google Find Hub (formerly Find My Device) | Lost Android phones | Locate, ring, lock or erase your own phone | Your own devices only |
| Google Maps location sharing | Mixed iPhone/Android families | Share live location for a time or until turned off | No history of others, no SOS |
| Free phone number lookup | “Where is this number from?” | Country, line type, format | No location |
| Emergency services | Real emergencies | Locate a caller, request carrier data | Emergencies only |
What no free tool can do
There is no free — or paid — website that shows a live location from a phone number alone. Phone numbers don’t carry GPS coordinates, and carriers only share tower data with emergency services or under a court order. Typical “free phone tracker by number” sites either draw the country code on a map, or ask you to pay and then send the person a link they must accept anyway.
When paying is worth it
Free tools answer “where is it right now?”. A family locator answers “tell me when something changes”:
- Arrival and departure alerts for school, home and work — no need to keep checking.
- A day timeline of stops and routes.
- Driving reports for new drivers.
- Low-battery warnings before a phone goes dark.
- One-touch SOS with the available location for the whole family.
AI Family Locator includes all of it, starting with a one-time $4.99 web pass. There is no subscription, so nothing renews.
Watch out for “free” traps
- “No consent needed” — that’s describing illegal tracking.
- A “free” search that ends at a payment page before showing anything.
- Apps asking you to disable security settings on the other phone.
