Troubleshooting

# Why is my family member’s location not updating on iPhone?

Check location permissions, connectivity, sharing consent and the last update time before treating a stale family-map pin as a current location.

**The short answer:** a family-map pin can stop updating when the phone has no connection, runs out of power, lacks location permission or stops sharing. Check the timestamp first. An old location shows where the phone was at the recorded time; it does not prove where the person is now, why updates stopped, or whether they are in danger.

This guide is published by AI Family Locator. It provides a troubleshooting sequence, not results from a controlled device test. See our [product facts and limitations](https://ailocator.app/product-facts) for what the service requires.

## Start with the last update time

Before changing settings, compare the displayed location with its last update time. A pin at school from earlier in the day is different from a fresh position at school. Avoid drawing a route or assuming someone stayed there based only on a stale point.

If you need a timely answer, contact the person directly. In an emergency, contact local emergency services rather than waiting for an app to update.

## What should we check first?

| Check | What to do | What it tells you |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Power and connection | Ask whether the phone is on and has working Wi-Fi or mobile data | New app updates need the device to communicate |
| Sharing consent | Confirm the person accepted the invitation and still wants to share | Entering their number alone does not enable sharing |
| Location permission | Review the app’s access in iPhone settings | A denied permission prevents the app receiving location |
| Position conditions | Consider buildings, surroundings and available signals | A reported position can be approximate |
| Notifications | Review notification access separately | Missing an alert and missing a map update are different problems |

Work through these checks together on the phone that shares its location. Do not ask anyone to hand over their account password or disable device security.

## Where are location permissions on iPhone?

Apple documents the path **Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services**. Check whether Location Services is on, then select the relevant app to review its permission. The options shown depend on the app and how it requests access.

Choose access that matches how you want to share. If you expect updates while another app is open, review the app’s background-location explanation and available permission options. Background access is a choice, not something you should enable without understanding it. Precise Location also affects whether an app receives a more exact or approximate position.

For the current options and explanations, use [Apple’s Location Services guidance](https://support.apple.com/en-us/102515). Permission changes cannot guarantee a particular update interval or accuracy.

## Why does the pin look inaccurate?

Location Services can combine GPS, Wi-Fi, mobile networks and other signals. Buildings and the surrounding environment affect positioning. A pin near a building is not proof of a particular room, entrance or activity.

An app also cannot make a new position arrive from a device that is off or disconnected. AI Family Locator’s family map should be understood separately from [finding a lost iPhone with Apple Find My](https://ailocator.app/guides/find-lost-iphone), which has its own device-finding capabilities and requirements.

## What if the checks do not help?

Contact [support](https://ailocator.app/support) with the affected device model, iOS version, app version, approximate time the issue started and whether the timestamp or only an alert is missing. Share screenshots only after removing private locations and other people’s details. Do not send passwords or payment-card information.

People can withdraw sharing permission. If someone has chosen to stop, use the [invitation and consent process](https://ailocator.app/guides/how-location-requests-work) when they want to resume. The [app privacy policy](https://ilego.github.io/ailocator/privacy.html) explains participation and data handling.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does an old location mean someone turned sharing off?

No. Connectivity, permissions, device power and other conditions can interrupt updates. An old pin alone does not explain the cause.

### Can a switched-off iPhone send live app location updates?

No. A family locator needs a working device and connection for new app updates. Apple’s Find My device-finding features are separate.

### Does a phone number reveal someone’s current GPS location?

No. A number can identify a numbering region or format; current location requires sharing from the device with permission.
