**Short answer:** you cannot locate a phone from its number alone. What a number can do is start an invitation: on AI Family Locator you enter a family member’s phone number, the site creates an invitation link, and the person installs the app and accepts. Only after they accept and allow location sharing do their live location, battery and speed appear on your web map.

**Quick facts**

- **A number alone:** reveals the country and line type at most, never a live location.
- **What the number is used for:** addressing an invitation to a specific person.
- **Required from the other person:** install the app, accept the invitation, allow location sharing.
- **Where you watch:** the web family map at [/app/map](https://ailocator.app/app/map), in any browser.
- **Cost:** $4.99 once (1 number) or $19.99 once (unlimited numbers), no subscription.

## Why “locate by number” is such a common search

People search this when they are worried: a child is not answering, a parent is late, a teenager’s phone is off. The idea that a number is a handle that can find a phone is common in films and in the marketing of some sites. In reality it does not work that way, and understanding why will protect you from scams.

A phone number is an address for calls and messages. It tells the network how to route a call; it does not publish where the handset is. Only the mobile carrier has network location data, and carriers release it to emergency services or under court order, not to a website or a member of the public. A free [phone number lookup](https://ailocator.app/phone-number-lookup) can show the numbering plan, country and line type of a number. It cannot show who owns it or where it is right now. Our detailed explainer is [how to track a phone number location](https://ailocator.app/guides/how-to-track-a-phone-number-location).

## What consent-based “locate by number” means

When a service says you can “locate a number” responsibly, it must be doing something different: using the number to reach the person and ask. AI Family Locator’s flow is exactly that.

1. **You enter the number.** In the web app at [/app](https://ailocator.app/app), after buying a pass, you enter a family member’s phone number.
2. **The site creates an invitation link.** The link is for that person.
3. **You send it.** By message or any messenger.
4. **They install the app.** The publicly linked AI Family Locator sharing app is for iPhone. Verify the installation link for another platform before purchasing a web pass.
5. **They accept.** And allow location sharing on their own phone.
6. **Only then does the map update.** Their live location, battery and speed appear on your web map.

If any step in 3 to 5 does not happen, you see nothing. That is not a bug; it is the design. It also means nobody can use the product to follow a person who does not know about it. For more on this see [how location requests work](https://ailocator.app/guides/how-location-requests-work).

## What you cannot do, and should be wary of

- **Find a stranger’s phone.** If a website claims it can, it is either unable, or relying on a link that tricks the person into sharing.
- **Locate a phone from its IMEI.** See [tracking a phone with an IMEI](https://ailocator.app/guides/how-to-track-a-phone-with-imei) for what is and is not possible.
- **Locate a phone that is off.** A powered-off or disconnected phone cannot send new positions; see [finding a phone that is turned off](https://ailocator.app/guides/find-a-phone-that-is-turned-off).
- **Treat a pin as proof.** A pin can be a last known position. Check the timestamp.

## If the phone is your own and is missing

Use the device-finding service already set up on the phone: Find My for iPhone, or Find My Device for Android. These must have been enabled before the phone went missing; a new app or pass cannot enable them retroactively. Read [how to find a lost iPhone](https://ailocator.app/guides/find-lost-iphone).

## If the person is a family member

Ask them. Explain what is shared, who sees it and how they can stop. For a teenager, our [teen location-sharing guide](https://ailocator.app/guides/location-sharing-with-teens) suggests how to frame the conversation. For an older parent, see [elderly parent safety](https://ailocator.app/guides/elderly-parent-safety). People are far more likely to keep sharing when they chose it.

## If you are worried about immediate safety

Contact local emergency services. A family locator is not emergency dispatch, delivery of alerts is not guaranteed, and a map position may be out of date.

## The privacy model in brief

- Sharing requires an accepted invitation.
- The shared person controls location permission on their device and can leave the circle.
- The service is for lawful, consent-based use. Covert monitoring of another adult may be illegal where you live.
- Product claims and limits are listed on [product facts](https://ailocator.app/product-facts).

## Cost and the web pass

The web family map is sold as a one-time lifetime pass: $4.99 once for one phone number, or $19.99 once for unlimited numbers. There is no trial or subscription. App Store in-app subscriptions are separate. See [pricing](https://ailocator.app/pricing) for the passes and [billing](https://ailocator.app/legal/billing) for refund terms.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I find someone's location with only their phone number?

No. A phone number alone does not reveal a live GPS location. A number can be used to prepare an invitation; the person must install the app, accept and allow location sharing.

### What does entering a number actually do?

On AI Family Locator, entering a family member's number creates an invitation link for that person. It does not locate the phone. Their location appears only after they accept.

### Do carriers reveal a phone's location?

Carriers can locate phones for emergency services or under legal process, but they do not share it with the public. A website cannot get it from a number.

### What if the person never accepts?

Then nothing appears on your map. Consent is required, and the person can decline or stop sharing at any time on their own device.
