When your child starts walking to school, taking the bus or going out with friends, knowing where they are brings real peace of mind. The goal is to feel calm — not to monitor every move. Here’s how to set it up well.

## Step 1: Choose how you’ll share

- **iPhone family:** Apple’s Find My and Family Sharing let you see family members who share with you.
- **Mixed devices:** Google Maps location sharing works across iPhone and Android.
- **Want alerts, not just a map:** a family locator like [AI Family Locator](https://ailocator.app/) sends you a note when they arrive at school or get home, so you don’t need to keep checking.

## Step 2: Set up the places that matter

The most useful feature for parents is the **arrival alert**. Add the places your child goes most:

- Home
- School
- After-school club or sports
- A grandparent’s or friend’s house

You’ll get a gentle notification when they arrive and when they leave. Most days that’s all you need to know. Read more about [arrival alerts](https://ailocator.app/guides/arrival-alerts-for-family).

## Step 3: Talk about it before you turn it on

Children accept location sharing much more easily when they understand it’s about safety, not suspicion. Try:

- “This is so I know you got there okay, like a text that sends itself.”
- “You can see where I am too.”
- “If something feels wrong, you can press SOS and we’ll know exactly where you are.”

## Step 4: Teach the SOS button

Show your child how SOS works in your app. In AI Family Locator, holding the button for three seconds alerts the whole family with their exact location. Practice it once together so they’re not unsure in a stressful moment.

## Step 5: Keep the phone charged

A dead battery is the most common reason a child “disappears” from the map. Turn on battery alerts and agree on a habit: charge overnight, carry a small power bank on long days.

## Rules that work by age

| Age | What usually works |
| --- | --- |
| 8–11 | Location on all the time, arrival alerts for school and home, SOS practiced. |
| 12–14 | Location on, fewer check-ins, more conversation about why. |
| 15–17 | Agree when it’s on — late nights, trips, driving. Respect more privacy. |

Our guide to [location sharing with teens](https://ailocator.app/guides/location-sharing-with-teens) goes deeper into older kids.

## What not to do

- **Don’t track secretly.** When kids find out — and they do — trust takes a long time to rebuild.
- **Don’t use the map to interrogate.** “I saw you stopped at the shop” turns a safety tool into surveillance.
- **Don’t forget to share yourself.** Mutual sharing feels fair.

## Get started

With [AI Family Locator](https://ailocator.app/start) you can set up your family map in about a minute: enter your child’s number, choose a plan, then send the invite from the app. Once they accept, you’ll see them on the map and get arrival alerts for the places that matter.

## Frequently asked questions

### At what age should I share location with my child?

Most families start when a child gets their first phone or begins traveling alone, often between 9 and 12. What matters more than age is explaining why and agreeing on rules together.

### Can I see my child’s location without them knowing?

We don’t recommend it, and many apps — including ours — don’t allow it. Secret tracking damages trust when it’s discovered, and older children quickly find out.

### What if my child’s phone is off or the battery is dead?

The map shows the last known location and when it was updated. Battery alerts in AI Family Locator warn you before the phone dies, so you can remind them to charge.
