**The short answer:** a phone-number location request is an invitation to share location. The number helps you contact the person; it does not contain live GPS coordinates. With AI Family Locator, the recipient installs the app, accepts an invitation through a code or link on their own device, and grants the permissions needed for sharing. Paying for a plan does not replace that agreement.

We publish this guide as the makers of AI Family Locator. It explains the documented consent model, rather than reporting a timed setup test. See our [product facts](https://ailocator.app/product-facts) for platform requirements and limitations.

## What happens at each stage?

| Stage | What it means | What it does not mean |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Enter a number | Prepare to contact a family member | Discover their GPS coordinates |
| Send an invitation | Offer a code or link the recipient can accept | Force an installation or enable location remotely |
| Recipient joins | They accept on their own device | Remove their control of sharing permissions |
| Device shares location | The app receives permitted device updates | Guarantee an exact position or uninterrupted updates |

The linked public sharing app is for iPhone. Confirm the current requirements on the [App Store listing](https://apps.apple.com/app/id6816534113) before choosing it for your family. For mixed-device households, our [cross-platform location-sharing guide](https://ailocator.app/guides/share-location-iphone-and-android) explains free alternatives and the browser-viewer distinction.

## What should I explain before sending a request?

Tell the recipient who is inviting them, why you want to share and who will participate. Decide together whether sharing is for everyday routines, travel or a particular period. A family member should understand the invitation before opening it.

A useful checklist is:

- Confirm you have the intended person’s number.
- Explain what the family wants to use the map for.
- Discuss location history and alerts as well as the current map.
- Make sure everyone knows how to stop participating.
- Review the one-time pass terms before purchasing.

For children and teens, explain the arrangement in language they understand and revisit it as their needs change. Our [guide to sharing with teens](https://ailocator.app/guides/location-sharing-with-teens) offers discussion prompts.

## What if the recipient declines or does not respond?

You cannot treat silence as acceptance. A request, number validation or payment cannot grant permission on someone else’s phone. Contact the person normally if you need to check in, and respect their decision about sharing.

Likewise, a number lookup can describe numbering information such as country code and format. It cannot show the phone’s present location. Our [phone number lookup](https://ailocator.app/phone-number-lookup) and [tracking-by-number explainer](https://ailocator.app/guides/how-to-track-a-phone-number-location) describe that distinction.

## What can interrupt sharing after acceptance?

An accepted invitation does not guarantee continuous updates. A phone can lose its connection, run out of power or have permissions changed. Positioning conditions also affect accuracy. Look at the recorded update time rather than assuming every map pin is current.

Use our [iPhone location troubleshooting checklist](https://ailocator.app/guides/location-not-updating-iphone) if a location becomes stale. Someone may also withdraw participation or revoke location access. The [app privacy policy](https://ilego.github.io/ailocator/privacy.html) explains that control.

## What should I know about plans and emergencies?

Read [web pricing](https://ailocator.app/pricing) before checkout: web passes are one-time payments with no renewal, and App Store in-app subscriptions are separate. A pass is access to the service, not a guarantee that another person will accept an invitation.

The app’s three-second SOS action alerts the family. It is not an emergency-dispatch service or a substitute for contacting local emergency services. See [SOS capabilities and limits](https://ailocator.app/features/sos-alert).

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I see a location before the invitation is accepted?

No. Entering a number or buying a plan does not bypass the other person’s agreement and device permissions.

### Does the other person need the app?

Yes. AI Family Locator sharing requires installation and acceptance of an invitation on the participant’s own device.

### Can someone stop sharing after accepting?

Yes. Participation can be withdrawn, including by leaving the sharing group or revoking location permission.
