**To look for your lost iPhone, open Find My on a trusted Apple device or go to [iCloud.com/find](https://www.icloud.com/find).** Whether you can see a current or last known location depends on the phone and its settings. These steps help you check the available options and protect your account; they cannot guarantee recovery.

## 1\. Locate it

- On another Apple device, open **Find My → Devices** and select your iPhone.
- Or go to **icloud.com/find** in any browser and sign in with your Apple Account.

You’ll see its current or last known location on a map.

## 2\. Play a sound

If it’s nearby — in the sofa, a bag, the car — tap **Play Sound**. It plays even if the phone is on silent.

## 3\. Turn on Lost Mode

Tap **Mark As Lost**. This locks the phone, shows a message and phone number on the screen, and suspends Apple Pay. If someone finds it, they can call you.

## 4\. Don’t go after it alone

If the map shows your phone at an unfamiliar address, contact the police rather than going there yourself.

## 5\. Protect your accounts

- Change your Apple Account password if you think someone knows your passcode.
- Tell your bank if you use mobile banking.
- Ask your carrier to suspend the SIM if it’s been stolen.

## 6\. Erase only as a last resort

**Erase This Device** removes data and cannot be undone. Before using it, read [Apple’s current lost-iPhone guidance](https://support.apple.com/en-us/101593), including its explanation of locating a device after erasure. Do not remove a stolen device from Find My in response to a message from someone claiming to have found it.

A web checkout or a newly installed family app cannot retroactively turn on Find My for a missing phone. If Find My was not enabled before the loss, check Apple’s guidance for the account-protection steps available to you.

## Prevent it next time

- Keep **Find My** and **Send Last Location** turned on.
- Turn on **Stolen Device Protection** in Settings → Face ID & Passcode.
- Share your location with a family member, so someone you trust can help. With [AI Family Locator](https://ailocator.app/) your family circle sees your last location and gets an alert if your battery is about to die — useful when a phone goes missing and when a person does.

## Watch for messages claiming your phone was found

A map pin is a lead, not proof of who has the phone. Do not go to an unfamiliar address alone or confront anyone. Keep the device serial number or IMEI available for a report to your carrier or the authorities, and follow their instructions.

If you receive an unexpected link asking for your Apple Account password, passcode or verification code, use Apple’s official site directly instead. Do not give those details to someone claiming they need them to return the phone. Our [IMEI explainer](https://ailocator.app/guides/how-to-track-a-phone-with-imei) explains why a device identifier is not a public GPS lookup tool.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I find my iPhone if it’s turned off?

Often yes. Recent iPhones can be found for some time after they power off or run out of battery through the Find My network, if Find My was enabled.

### Can I find my iPhone without another Apple device?

Yes. Sign in at icloud.com/find in any web browser.

### Should I erase my iPhone right away?

Review Apple’s lost-device instructions before erasing. Remote erasure removes data and cannot be undone. Finding a device after erasure depends on its software and settings; do not remove it from Find My just because someone asks you to.
