There’s no single “best” family locator — the right one depends on what phones your family uses and what you want the app to do. We make [AI Family Locator](https://ailocator.app/), so we’ve tried to be fair here and stick to things you can check yourself. Features and prices change often; always confirm on each app’s own page.

## How to use this comparison

This is a first-party buying guide from one of the products discussed, not an independent ranking or a measured reliability test. We compare published use cases, device requirements and billing models. For this October 29 editorial review, we used the provider links below and [our product facts and limitations](https://ailocator.app/product-facts); we did not independently test competing apps. Start with the free tools already on your devices if they meet your needs.

**Short answer:** For free location sharing in an all-iPhone household, start with Apple Find My; for iPhone and Android together, consider Google Maps. Glympse is useful for a temporary, expiring link that a recipient can open in a browser. Life360 and GeoZilla focus on ongoing family circles with additional safety features. AI Family Locator offers an iPhone family app with 3D map models and Family AI, plus a **separate one-time paid browser map** for approved invitations. There is no universal winner: choose based on which people need an app, what the viewer can do, and which features your payment actually unlocks.

## What to look for

- **Platforms:** does everyone in your family use iPhone, or a mix?
- **Alerts:** do you want notifications when someone arrives or leaves, or just a map?
- **Safety tools:** SOS, battery warnings, driving reports.
- **Privacy:** who can see the data, and does the company sell it? Read the privacy policy.
- **Price model:** free, free with paid upgrades, subscription, or a one-time payment.

## The apps

### Apple Find My

Built into every iPhone. You can share location with friends and family, get notified when someone arrives or leaves a place, and locate your devices. **Best for:** all-iPhone families who want something free. **Keep in mind:** it doesn’t work on Android. Read our [Find My alternative](https://ailocator.app/compare/apple-find-my-alternative) page for when an app adds value.

### Google Maps location sharing

Free, works on Android and iPhone. You share your real-time location with chosen people for a set time or until you turn it off. **Best for:** quick, simple sharing in mixed-device families. **Keep in mind:** it’s a feature of a maps app, not a family safety toolkit. See [Google Maps alternative](https://ailocator.app/compare/google-maps-location-sharing-alternative).

### Life360

One of the best-known family location apps, with a free tier and paid memberships that add features such as driving and safety services, depending on your country. **Best for:** families who want a large, established platform. **Keep in mind:** its free tier already includes some place alerts, location history and a family driving summary; longer history and individual driver reports depend on tier and region. See [Life360’s own plan comparison](https://www.life360.com/plans-pricing) and our [Life360 alternative](https://ailocator.app/compare/life360-alternative).

### Glympse

Lets you share your location temporarily — for a trip or a meetup — and the link expires. **Best for:** short, temporary sharing. **Keep in mind:** it’s not designed as an always-on family circle. See [Glympse alternative](https://ailocator.app/compare/glympse-alternative).

### GeoZilla

A family locator with location sharing, places and alerts. GeoZilla describes a free basic version and an optional Premium subscription for features such as location history, place alerts and driving protection; see [GeoZilla’s Premium description](https://support.geozilla.com/hc/en-us/articles/360011499400-What-are-the-benefits-of-a-Premium-subscription). **Best for:** families who want a dedicated locator app. See [GeoZilla alternative](https://ailocator.app/compare/geozilla-alternative).

### AI Family Locator

Our iPhone app brings together a private family circle, arrival and departure alerts, location history, in-app SOS, driving summaries, battery alerts, a Home Screen widget, 3D character and vehicle markers, and a Family AI assistant for everyday parenting questions. Some app features require Premium. **Best for:** iPhone households interested in a dedicated family app with 3D maps and a conversational assistant, or a browser viewer who wants a one-time purchase for the web map. **Keep in mind:** the public sharing app is for iPhone; an Android app is **coming soon**, without a confirmed Play Store release date. The **viewer** can already open the web map in an Android browser, but this does not make an Android sharing app available. [Web passes](https://ailocator.app/pricing) cost $4.99 once for one phone number or $19.99 once for unlimited numbers, without renewal. These passes cover the browser map, not every Premium feature in the iPhone app. Invited members must use a supported app and accept sharing. See [product facts](https://ailocator.app/product-facts) and [the browser setup guide](https://ailocator.app/guides/track-family-from-browser).

## Which option works from a browser without a recurring fee?

| Service | Browser viewer | What the person sharing needs | Payment to check |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Apple Find My | Apple devices / iCloud device-finding tools, depending on the feature | Their own Apple device and enabled sharing | Free built-in option |
| Google Maps | Depends on the Google Maps sharing flow and link | Google Maps and their permission to share | Free location-sharing feature |
| Glympse | Yes, the recipient opens a time-limited link without an app | Glympse mobile app to send a live share | Free mobile sharing; check business Premium terms |
| AI Family Locator | Yes, after a one-time web pass | Supported family app, accepted invitation, location access | $4.99 for one number or $19.99 for unlimited numbers, web only |

Glympse’s [official FAQ](https://app.glympse.com/faq/do-i-need-to-download-the-glympse-app-to-view-a-glympse/) confirms that recipients can view a link without installing the app. The AI Family Locator web pass does not remove the requirement for the **person being viewed** to install the supported app and approve sharing. Browser access, the iPhone app and the App Store subscription are different things; [see the full product reference](https://ailocator.app/product-facts).

## Compare the requirements before the feature list

| Your question | What to verify before choosing |
| --- | --- |
| Does everyone have an Apple device? | Whether the actual devices you use can participate, not just open a web page |
| Do we only need temporary sharing? | Sharing duration, recipient access and how the link or permission expires |
| Do we need arrival notifications? | Which plans and devices support them, who receives them and how to stop them |
| Is the phone already missing? | Use the owner’s existing Find My or Google device-finding setup; a new family app cannot enable it retroactively |
| What will it cost after the offer? | Current price, billing channel (one-time or subscription), renewal interval and cancellation method in your country |
| Who can see our locations? | The current privacy policy, circle membership, data retention and deletion options |

This table is a buying checklist, not a lab-tested feature ranking. We have not measured competing apps’ update speed, location accuracy, battery impact or alert delivery in this guide. Read a “Yes” in any provider’s feature list as a starting point for checking requirements, not a performance guarantee.

## Our recommendation

- **All iPhone and happy with the basics?** Start with Find My.
- **Mixed devices and just need a dot on a map?** Google Maps.
- **Want the app to tell you when they’ve arrived, warn you about low battery and give everyone an SOS button?** Try a dedicated family locator — [review AI Family Locator’s setup requirements](https://ailocator.app/guides/how-location-requests-work).

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the best free family locator?

Start by considering Apple Find My for an all-Apple family and Google Maps location sharing for iPhone and Android. The right option depends on your devices, sharing needs and settings; this guide is not a measured ranking.

### Do family locator apps work without the other person knowing?

Reputable apps don’t. The other person installs the app and agrees to share. That is how consent-based family sharing works; do not assume a phone number is permission to access someone’s location.

### Which family locator has arrival alerts?

Check the provider’s current documentation for place notifications, supported devices, recipient controls and plan limits. Do not assume all apps deliver alerts in the same way or at the same speed.
